The Lithium Revolution
From three perspectives, “The Lithium Revolution” tells about the global run for a possible key technology of the future.
2012 – the world population has passed the 7 billion mark. Due to a rapid economic growth in threshold countries like China, India and Brazil the demand for energy is exploding. Subsequently, the scarcity of raw materials is increasing dramatically, as are the prices for fossil fuels, which has an impact for example on the cost of food. At the same time, the climate change and natural or men-made disasters, as occurred in the Japanese power plant Fukushima, make it obvious that an ecological revolution of the energy sector becomes ever more urgent.
In the midst of all this, the rise of a new resource has caught the imagination of global players. Lithium – the potential energy resource of the 21st century – is not only the mineral central to new battery technologies and therefore to the development of electronic mobility. It could also be used for huge accumulators, storing wind and solar power over long periods of time – which would solve one of the biggest problems related to green energy.
A number of experts contemplate the role of lithium, now and in the future. They make the connections to larger issues at hand such as global justice and sustainable growth, and create an extensive overview over this high-stake power play with global repercussions.
