Secret Friend
A reappraisal of what used to be Brazil’s most successful anti-corruption trial - and what turned out to be a corrupt lawfare against ex-president Lula da Silva.
Synopsis
In her film “Amigo Secreto”, Brazilian director Maria Ramos meticulously reconstructs, based on the research of three journalists, how the Brazilian anti-corruption trial “Lava Jato” (2014-2021) was deliberately launched in order to eliminate political opponents; how judge Sergio Moro transformed an anti-corruption trial into an instrument of ideological persecution and helped the extreme right and thus Jair Bolsonaro to power. And how the leftist former president Lula da Silva was systematically discredited by “Lava Jato” and barred from re-election in 2018.
