Hiphop – Made in Germany
A look at German history and music history through the lens of hiphop.
Moving from subculture to mainstream, from authenticity to commercialism, and from the charming town of Heidelberg to the bustling metropolises of Germany, German hiphop has undergone constant evolution over the past 40 years.
Since its inception, rap has been a consistent mirror reflecting and commenting on our society. Whether tackling issues like sexism, racism, antisemitism, or responding to major events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and the current corona crisis, rap adapts, captures the spirit of the time, and offers critique that often sparks polarization.
The documentary series “Hiphop – Made in Germany” centers around the road movie concept. An iconic 1984 Mercedes-Benz takes on the role of our nostalgic setting, German history serves as our guiding navigation system, and the driving force behind our journey is the dynamic fabric of hip-hop culture.
Behind the wheel, a diverse mix of rap legends, newcomers, and scene icons traverse the landscape of hip-hop history. Simultaneously, they reflect on German history and their own personal narratives through the rear-view mirror.
Featuring prominent figures such as Eko Fresh, König Boris, Eunique, Liz, Smudo, Ebow, Denyo, Toni-L, Schwesta Ewa, Kitty Kat, T-Low, along with insights from Gregor Gysi, Michel Friedman, and others, the docu-series offers a captivating exploration of the intertwined narratives of German hip-hop and its cultural and historical context.
